Nepal’s Rasuwa Flood
A sudden wall of water, mud and rock swept through northern Nepal on August 26, 2026, destroying riverside settlements and leaving scores dead and hundreds missing or out of contact. The Rasuwa disaster is still unfolding, while scientists investigate what triggered the catastrophic flood.

For the people living beside the Bhotekoshi River in northern Nepal, Wednesday morning began like any other monsoon day.
Then the river changed.
A huge surge of muddy water, rocks and debris came rushing down from the direction of Tibet, sweeping through settlements in Rasuwa district before continuing downstream.
Homes disappeared.
Bridges were damaged or washed away.
Roads were destroyed.
Vehicles were carried by the water.
And within hours, one of Nepal's worst natural disasters of 2026 was unfolding.
The August 26 flood has devastated communities along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems, with Rasuwa and Nuwakot among the areas suffering the most severe damage.
A Disaster That Arrived Suddenly
Officials in Rasuwa received reports of the enormous flood during Wednesday morning.
The water entered Nepal from the Tibetan side and surged through the Bhotekoshi River.
Places including Timure and Syabrubesi were among the first areas badly affected.
As the flood moved downstream, settlements along the Trishuli River were warned to move away from riverbanks and seek safer ground.
The scale quickly became clear.
Buildings that had stood beside the river for years were torn apart within minutes. Markets, hydropower facilities, roads and security installations were damaged.
An aerial assessment later showed destruction extending from the Rasuwagadhi border region towards Nuwakot, while survivors climbed to higher ground and some stranded residents waited on rooftops for rescue.
The Death Toll Continued to Rise
Because the disaster was still developing throughout August 26, casualty figures changed rapidly.
By Wednesday evening, Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority had reported 72 recovered bodies across seven districts.
According to that update, deaths had been recorded in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, Gorkha, Tanahu and Nawalparasi East.
A later Reuters report cited police saying that 95 bodies had been recovered.
The difference illustrates how quickly information was changing as rescue teams reached more areas. The final toll may therefore differ considerably from early figures.
Hundreds of people were also reported missing or out of contact.
An earlier Nepal Tourism Board assessment listed 384 people, including 291 foreign nationals, as unaccounted for. Security personnel, hydropower workers, customs officials and tourists were among those whose whereabouts were uncertain.
Foreign travellers from several countries were believed to be in the region, adding an international dimension to the emergency.
What Caused Such an Enormous Flood?
This may become one of the most important questions surrounding the disaster.
The precise cause had not been officially established by Wednesday evening.
However, preliminary scientific assessments pointed towards a dramatic event high in the mountains.
Researchers suspect that an ice or ice-rock avalanche may have fallen into the Lhende River near the Nepal-Tibet border.
One possibility is that this material temporarily blocked the river, allowing water to accumulate behind it. When that natural barrier failed, an enormous volume of water and debris could have been released suddenly downstream. Scientists were also investigating whether a glacial lake played a role.
Reuters reported another intriguing detail.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences recorded a magnitude 4.4 earthquake in the region roughly seven minutes before the time visible on security footage of the disaster.
Whether the earthquake actually triggered the avalanche remained uncertain, however, and experts cautioned that the exact chain of events still needed investigation.
That distinction is important.
In the immediate aftermath of a disaster, early explanations can change as scientists obtain satellite imagery and conduct field investigations.
A Second Flood Was Feared
The danger did not necessarily end after the first surge.
Experts warned that material could still be blocking part of the river upstream, creating the possibility of another sudden release.
Residents near vulnerable riverbanks were therefore urged to remain away from dangerous areas.
The concern extended beyond Nepal.
Because the Bhotekoshi eventually feeds into the Trishuli and then river systems flowing towards India, alerts were also issued farther downstream. Reuters reported evacuations from vulnerable areas of Bihar as authorities watched the developing situation.
Rescuers Face a Difficult Battle
Nepal mobilised the Army, Armed Police Force, Nepal Police, government agencies and emergency teams for search-and-rescue work.
Hospitals in affected districts and major medical centres in Kathmandu were placed on heightened readiness.
But reaching survivors was difficult.
This is steep Himalayan terrain.
Roads had been destroyed.
Communications were disrupted.
Rain continued.
And swollen rivers made movement dangerous.
Poor weather also complicated helicopter operations in some affected locations.
Across the border, Chinese rescue personnel were deployed around the Gyirong region, where roads, communications and electricity infrastructure were also damaged.
The Himalayan Warning
Nepal is naturally vulnerable to floods and landslides.
Its steep mountains, powerful rivers and intense monsoon rains have always created danger.
But disasters originating high in glacier-covered Himalayan regions present an additional challenge.
A flood caused by a landslide, avalanche or sudden release of trapped water may arrive much faster than a conventional river flood caused by days of rainfall.
Communities downstream can have very little time to react.
The Rasuwa flood therefore raises difficult questions about monitoring glaciers, unstable mountain slopes, cross-border warning systems and the protection of rapidly developing settlements and infrastructure beside Himalayan rivers.
But those discussions will come later.
For now, this remains a rescue operation.
Families are searching for missing relatives.
Tourists and workers remain unaccounted for.
Emergency teams are trying to reach communities cut off by destroyed roads and bridges.
And scientists are watching the mountains upstream for signs that another surge could come.
The numbers will change as more information becomes available.
What will not change is the speed with which life along the Bhotekoshi changed on August 26.
One morning, people were living, travelling and working beside the river.
Hours later, entire stretches of that river valley had been transformed.
The Rasuwa flood is another devastating reminder that in the Himalayas, a disaster can begin kilometres away and high above human settlements—and still reach the valley below with almost no warning.
