The Pasadena Civic Auditorium in California was hosting the recording of Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever, a television celebration of the record company that had introduced a young Michael Jackson and his brothers to millions of listeners. The program would later air nationally on May 16.

The moonwalk had arrived in popular culture.

He Didn't Invent It—He Made It Immortal

Michael Jackson is sometimes described as the creator of the moonwalk, but the history of the movement is much older.

Backward-gliding dance techniques can be traced through generations of Black performers, vaudeville artists, tap dancers and later performers associated with shows such as Soul Train. Dancer Jeffrey Daniel was among the performers connected with the development and teaching of the move before Jackson made his version famous.

That doesn't diminish Michael's achievement.

It explains it.

Great artists do not always create every ingredient they use. Sometimes their genius lies in taking influences, combining them with their own style and presenting something so powerfully that the world sees it differently afterward.

Michael didn't simply perform a backward slide.

But records allow people to hear an artist.

Motown 25 allowed millions to understand Michael Jackson as a performer.

Suddenly the dancing mattered almost as much as the singing.

The glove mattered.

The fedora mattered.

The poses mattered.

Even the silences between movements seemed choreographed.

That ability to make an audience wait for the next movement became one of Jackson's greatest strengths.

At the 1988 Grammy Awards, his performance combining “The Way You Make Me Feel” and “Man in the Mirror” became another celebrated example of his stage ability. The Recording Academy itself describes it as arguably one of the greatest performances in Grammy history.

Yet Motown 25 remains different.

Later, people expected Michael Jackson to do something extraordinary.

That night, they didn't.

They were watching the surprise happen in real time.

A Few Seconds That Outlived an Era
