Cancer treatment rarely depends on one doctor or one machine. A patient may need imaging and pathology first, then surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation or blood-cancer treatment.
That is why India's best-known cancer institutions are usually multidisciplinary centres. The hospitals below are not ranked. They are representative centres whose current oncology services can be verified from their own institutional material.

Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai — Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research
Tata Memorial Hospital is one of India's most established specialist cancer institutions. Its official history dates the hospital to 1941, with the Tata Memorial Centre later coming under the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India.
Tata Memorial has specialist activity across surgical, medical, radiation and paediatric oncology, while its academic programmes train oncologists in multiple subspecialties. It also forms part of a wider Tata Memorial Centre network extending beyond Mumbai.
That model matters because complex cancers often require surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists and pathologists to plan treatment together.
AIIMS New Delhi — A Major Public-Sector Oncology Centre
At AIIMS New Delhi, the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital provides comprehensive oncology services within a major public teaching hospital.
Its listed departments include medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, radiodiagnosis, onco-haematopathology, preventive oncology and medical physics. AIIMS also treats paediatric solid cancers and blood cancers through its medical-oncology services.
Its importance lies in combining specialist cancer treatment with diagnostics, pathology, education and referral care inside the public system.
Cancer Institute (WIA), Chennai — A Long-Standing Specialist Institution
The Cancer Institute (WIA) in Adyar has a long history as a dedicated cancer institution.
Its current departments include medical, surgical, radiation and paediatric oncology, nuclear medicine and palliative care. The institute also has a major educational role; its official material notes that super-specialty training in medical and surgical oncology was introduced there in the 1980s.
Its paediatric-oncology programme has especially deep roots, with the institute dating its dedicated unit to 1960.
Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bengaluru — Public Multispecialty Cancer Care
The Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology is a Government of Karnataka cancer centre in Bengaluru.
Its clinical structure includes medical, surgical, radiation and paediatric oncology, along with head-and-neck, gynaecological and oral oncology. Kidwai's Medical Oncology department documents chemotherapy, biotherapy, supportive care and bone-marrow transplantation, while its facilities include high-precision radiation techniques and a dedicated BMT unit.
Apollo Proton Cancer Centre, Chennai — Proton Therapy and Integrated Oncology
The Apollo Proton Cancer Centre represents the high-technology private end of India's oncology system.
Apollo describes the Chennai facility as South Asia's first proton-therapy centre. Proton therapy is a form of radiation treatment that can be useful in selected cancers where limiting dose to surrounding healthy tissue is particularly important.
The centre is not limited to proton treatment. Its current services integrate medical, surgical and radiation oncology across multiple cancer types.
Proton therapy is not automatically the best radiation option for every tumour. Whether it offers an advantage depends on cancer type, location and the individual treatment plan.
HCG Cancer Centre, Bengaluru — Multimodal Private Cancer Care
HCG Cancer Centre on K.R. Road, Bengaluru is another specialist private cancer hospital.
Its documented services include medical, surgical and radiation oncology, paediatric oncology, nuclear medicine, robotic surgery and site-specific cancer programmes. HCG also operates haemato-oncology and bone-marrow-transplant services.
The Bengaluru centre lists technologies including CyberKnife, adaptive radiotherapy, PET-CT and molecular diagnostics. Advanced equipment, however, should not by itself determine where a patient is treated; the relevant question is whether the clinical team routinely manages that cancer and whether the proposed technology is appropriate.
Choosing a Cancer Centre Starts With the Cancer Type
A hospital strong in paediatric leukaemia may not be the same centre a patient chooses for complex head-and-neck surgery. Someone needing bone-marrow transplantation also has different requirements from a patient receiving radiation for a localised solid tumour.
Cancer care may involve surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, haemato-oncology and transplant services, or paediatric oncology. Many patients need more than one.
That is why a list of famous hospitals should be a starting point, not a prescription. The practical comparison is between the hospital's disease-specific team, pathology and imaging support, treatment options, follow-up, cost and accessibility.
India's strength is the presence of major public, charitable and private cancer centres across several cities. The right centre depends less on the most famous name and more on the expertise needed for the cancer being treated.
