The semiconductor industry has always moved quickly, but 2026 feels different. Chips are no longer just hidden components inside phones and laptops. They have become the foundation of the global artificial intelligence race, a strategic priority for governments, and one of the biggest areas of investment in technology.

By mid-August, developments from Taiwan, South Korea, the United States, Europe and India point in the same direction: demand is rising rapidly, but so are costs, supply pressures and geopolitical risks.

AI Demand Is Pushing Chip Sales Higher

The clearest sign of the boom is the scale of global semiconductor sales. The Semiconductor Industry Association reported that worldwide chip sales reached $403.3 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 35.1% from the first quarter. June alone accounted for $134.5 billion.

Artificial intelligence is a major driver. Training and running powerful AI models requires enormous computing capacity, creating demand not only for GPUs and AI accelerators but also for high-bandwidth memory, networking chips and advanced manufacturing equipment.

TSMC Remains at the Centre of Advanced Manufacturing

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company continues to benefit from this demand. TSMC reported July 2026 revenue of about NT$467.58 billion, 44.7% higher than a year earlier. Revenue for the first seven months of 2026 was up 37% compared with the same period in 2025.

Those figures matter because TSMC manufactures advanced chips for many of the world's largest technology companies. As AI demand grows, pressure quickly reaches its fabrication plants and advanced packaging operations.

The company is also expanding production outside Taiwan, including a major long-term manufacturing expansion in Arizona. This reflects a wider trend: companies and governments increasingly want chip production spread across multiple regions rather than concentrated in only a few locations.

South Korea Is Doubling Down on Chips

South Korea is accelerating its semiconductor strategy as well. In August, the government announced a 5 trillion won, or roughly $3.5 billion, fund for semiconductor materials, components, equipment and fabless companies. Another 5 trillion won in trade finance is planned for suppliers.

That public support sits beside much larger investment plans. Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, suppliers and local governments are expected to invest more than $576 billion in new semiconductor projects under the country's broader chip initiative.

The focus is understandable. South Korea is already a global powerhouse in memory chips, and the AI boom has made advanced memory even more valuable.

Samsung Sees Tight Supply Continuing

Samsung Electronics has offered one of the strongest signals that demand could remain intense. The company said it expects global chip shortages to become more severe and extend into 2028. It has also signed multi-year supply agreements with major data-centre operators seeking guaranteed access to memory capacity.

That could reshape the traditional boom-and-bust nature of the memory market. Large AI infrastructure companies increasingly prefer long-term supply certainty, while sustained shortages could create higher costs for other technology companies.

Intel Is Funding a Manufacturing Comeback

In the United States, Intel is trying to rebuild its position as a major chip manufacturer. In August, the company raised $20 billion through an upsized share offering to support its expansion in contract chip manufacturing, new facilities and advanced packaging.

Intel is trying to compete more directly with TSMC and plans high-volume production using its 14A manufacturing process in 2028.

Its progress matters beyond one company. A stronger American foundry business could give global chip designers another advanced manufacturing option and reduce dependence on production concentrated in Asia.

Europe's ASML Remains Essential

Europe's biggest semiconductor advantage may be a company that does not actually manufacture chips. Dutch firm ASML builds extreme ultraviolet lithography systems used to produce the most advanced logic and memory semiconductors.

Reuters reported in July that ASML was nearly sold out of its flagship EUV systems for 2027. Strong AI-related investment is creating demand for more advanced factories, which in turn increases demand for the highly specialised equipment needed to build them.

It is a useful reminder that the semiconductor industry depends on a vast ecosystem of equipment makers, material suppliers and packaging specialists.

India Wants a Larger Role

India is also pushing harder into the sector. In July, the government approved another 1.28 trillion rupees, around $13.3 billion, for its semiconductor programme. The funding is intended to support chip design, intellectual property, fabrication plants and research.

India has already approved 12 manufacturing units and 24 semiconductor design projects under its earlier incentive programme. Building a mature semiconductor ecosystem will take time, but the investment shows that chip manufacturing is increasingly being treated as strategic national infrastructure.

The Chip Race Is Also a Political Race

Technology is only part of the story. The United States and China continue to compete over advanced AI chips, manufacturing equipment and critical minerals. Washington is strengthening a US-led technology and supply-chain framework with partner countries, while China is developing competing AI cooperation structures.

For semiconductor companies, this means business decisions are becoming closely tied to export controls, subsidies, national-security rules and international alliances.

What Comes Next?

The semiconductor industry is entering one of its most important periods. AI is creating extraordinary demand, but it is also exposing limits in manufacturing capacity, memory supply, equipment availability and global supply chains.

The winners may not simply be the companies designing the fastest chips. They may be the businesses and countries that can secure manufacturing capacity, reliable suppliers, advanced equipment and long-term access to critical technologies.

For components measured in nanometres, semiconductors now occupy an enormous place in the global economy.
