Why Nintendo Built the Switch as a Hybrid Console

A Nintendo Switch can be a handheld system one moment and a living-room console the next. Slide the main unit into its dock and the game appears on a television; remove it, attach the Joy-Con controllers, and the same system becomes portable. Detach those controllers again and its own screen can support tabletop play.

That flexibility is why the Nintendo Switch is commonly described as a hybrid console. Nintendo's own terminology focuses on three play modes—TV, tabletop and handheld—but the idea is broader: one game system can adapt to different places and ways of playing. When Nintendo first revealed Switch in 2016, it described a home gaming system whose design added handheld-style mobility.

Handheld mode turns the main unit into a self-contained portable system. The console's screen becomes the display and the left and right Joy-Con attach directly to its sides.

Tabletop mode sits between those ideas. The system remains portable and uses its own screen, but it is placed on a surface with the controllers detached. Nintendo's support documentation describes tabletop play this way and notes that it can support single- or multiplayer use.

This middle mode matters because the Switch is not simply a handheld device with a TV connection. Its screen, stand, dock and detachable controls let the same hardware reconfigure around the situation.

Why the Dock and Joy-Con Matter

The dock is important because it turns a portable-shaped console into a television-based setup without requiring a separate home-console box. Nintendo's original 2016 announcement described the Switch resting in the dock at home and transitioning to handheld mode when lifted out.

The Joy-Con solve the control side of that transition. Attached to the console, they create the handheld configuration. Detached, they can be used for TV or tabletop play. In supported games, two people can each use a Joy-Con for local multiplayer. Not every game supports that arrangement, but detachable controls are fundamental to the Switch concept rather than merely an accessory choice.

There is one important family exception: Nintendo Switch Lite is designed specifically for handheld play and does not support TV mode. So “hybrid” describes the standard Switch concept and models built around its three-mode design, not every device carrying the Switch name.

The Bigger Design Idea

Nintendo's later developer commentary makes the original priority unusually clear. In a 2025 Ask the Developer discussion, Switch general director Kouichi Kawamoto said Nintendo had prioritized capabilities that could work with many kinds of software, giving TV and handheld play as an example. He contrasted that with requiring software developers to build around unusual hardware features.

That suggests a useful distinction. The Switch's defining platform feature was not that every developer had to invent a new control gimmick. The flexibility was built into the hardware itself. A conventional game could still benefit from being playable on a television, in the player's hands, or on a small shared screen.

Nintendo had expressed the same broad goal when it first revealed Switch: the same title could move from home into portable situations. The hybrid design therefore connected software continuity with physical flexibility.

Why Nintendo Kept the Concept for Switch 2

Nintendo Switch 2 shows how durable that idea became. Nintendo's current support material confirms that Switch 2 retains TV mode, tabletop mode and handheld mode, using a screen, dock and detachable Joy-Con 2 controllers.

Nintendo's developers said they considered changing the fundamental Switch form but decided against making “changes for change's sake.” Kawamoto explained that the screen-plus-detachable-controller design and TV play still worked across many kinds of software, while the team concentrated on expanding the new system's capabilities.

That continuity helps answer why Nintendo Switch is a hybrid console. The dock, built-in display and detachable controllers are not isolated features. Together they let one platform adapt to where and how the player wants to use it. Nintendo considered that flexibility valuable enough to preserve as the foundation of its next console generation.
