There are roads where you admire the scenery through the window.

On the Fairy Meadows road, there are moments when you may prefer not to look outside at all.

High in Gilgit-Baltistan in northern Pakistan, a narrow dirt track climbs from Raikot Bridge through a dramatic mountain gorge towards Tattu village. On one side stands a wall of rock. On the other, the edge of the road can disappear into a steep valley below.

There are no comfortable highway lanes.

No continuous guardrails protecting you from the drop.

And certainly no room for careless driving.

Yet travellers willingly make this journey because beyond that intimidating road lies Fairy Meadows—a green Alpine grassland beneath the enormous Raikot face of Nanga Parbat.

It is one of those rare journeys where getting there becomes almost as memorable as the destination itself.

Where the Adventure Begins

The journey changes suddenly at Raikot Bridge on the famous Karakoram Highway.

Normal vehicles stop here.

From this point, visitors transfer into local 4×4 jeeps for the mountain track towards Tattu, also written as Tato village.

Gilgit-Baltistan's official tourism department describes the route as a roughly 15-kilometre jeep track from Raikot Bridge to Tattu. From Tattu, the road ends completely and travellers must continue roughly five kilometres on foot to reach Fairy Meadows.

That distinction is important.

Despite the popular name “Fairy Meadows Road,” you cannot simply drive all the way into the meadow.

First you survive the jeep ride.

Then you walk.

The Road Gets Serious Quickly

Soon after leaving Raikot Bridge, the comfortable surface of the Karakoram Highway disappears behind you.

The jeep begins climbing.

Loose gravel replaces asphalt. The route twists repeatedly around the mountainside, and some stretches are barely wide enough for a single vehicle.

When another jeep approaches from the opposite direction, one driver may need to wait at a wider section before the other can pass.

Then you look towards the edge.

Far below lies the gorge.

Suddenly the old jeep feels very small.

Recent travel descriptions of the route put the jeep journey at roughly 1.5 to two hours depending on conditions. The road remains unpaved, steep and exposed, which is why local drivers operate the jeeps rather than visitors casually attempting it in their own vehicles.

The Drivers Make It Look Normal

Perhaps the strangest part of the journey is watching the driver.

Passengers may be gripping whatever handle they can find.

The driver often looks completely relaxed.

That is because local drivers know this road intimately. They understand where a jeep can safely pass, which corners require extra care and how the surface changes.

To a first-time visitor, every exposed turn can feel like a major event.

To the person driving, it is another working day.

That experience is also a reminder that Fairy Meadows Road should not be treated as an amusement ride.

Mountain roads change.

Rain can loosen rock.

Landslides can block sections.

Conditions that were manageable yesterday may not be identical today.

Confidence is useful here.

Overconfidence is not.

Tattu Is Where the Wheels Stop

Eventually, after the dust, rocks and seemingly endless bends, the jeep reaches Tattu village.

And that is it.

There is no final comfortable road leading into Fairy Meadows.

The rest must be earned on foot.

The trail towards the meadow climbs for around five kilometres through increasingly green surroundings. Official tourism information puts the hike at roughly three to four hours, although walking time naturally varies.

After the barren drama of the jeep road, the change is remarkable.

Pine forest begins to replace exposed rock.

The noise of the vehicle disappears.

There is only walking, mountain air and the growing anticipation of what lies ahead.

Then the trees begin to open.

And Nanga Parbat appears.

Why People Take the Risk

Fairy Meadows sits at approximately 3,300 metres above sea level in the Diamer district.

Directly beyond it rises Nanga Parbat, which at 8,126 metres is the world's ninth-highest mountain. The meadow lies near the mountain's Raikot face and has long served as a starting area for trekkers heading deeper towards Nanga Parbat.

The contrast is extraordinary.

After hours spent travelling through bare, intimidating mountain terrain, you suddenly arrive at green grass and forest.

Then behind everything stands an enormous wall of snow, ice and rock.

This is why photographs struggle to explain Fairy Meadows properly.

Nanga Parbat does not look like a mountain somewhere in the distance.

It dominates the horizon.

At sunrise and sunset, changing light moves across its face while the meadow below becomes almost completely quiet.

For many travellers, that view makes the difficult approach worthwhile.

A Road That Demands Respect

Fairy Meadows Road frequently appears in online lists of the world's most dangerous or frightening roads.

Those labels are useful for attracting attention, but they should not turn the route into a competition about bravery.

The real lesson of roads like this is respect.

Respect the mountain.

Respect the weather.

Respect the local driver.

And understand that remote travel sometimes requires accepting conditions very different from an ordinary highway journey.

If weather is poor or local authorities and drivers consider the road unsafe, the mountain will still be there another day.

The Best Part Comes After the Fear

Most travellers probably remember two completely different emotions from the journey.

The first comes while sitting inside the jeep.

You hear stones moving beneath the tyres.

You watch the vehicle approach another narrow corner.

Perhaps you accidentally look down into the valley and immediately decide to look towards the mountain instead.

The second emotion arrives hours later.

You are standing in Fairy Meadows.

The jeep is gone.

The dangerous road is somewhere far below.

In front of you is Nanga Parbat, rising more than eight kilometres above sea level.

And suddenly the uncomfortable ride makes sense.

Fairy Meadows Road is not remarkable because it is a road people should try to conquer.

It is remarkable because human beings managed to create a route through terrain that seems determined not to have one.

The road frightens you.

The hike exhausts you.

And then the mountain rewards you.

Sometimes the hardest roads really do lead to the most beautiful places.
