There are beautiful countries, and then there is Switzerland.

It is difficult to describe this small European nation without sounding as though you are exaggerating. Mountains rise behind perfectly still lakes. Wooden houses sit among green meadows covered with flowers. Waterfalls fall beside villages, trains disappear into tunnels carved through the Alps, and snow-covered peaks remain visible even when the valleys below are bright green.

Sometimes Switzerland does not look like a real country at all.

It looks like somebody took the best parts of a travel calendar and somehow turned them into a place.

The Alps Are Everywhere

The Swiss Alps are the country's most dramatic feature.

Travel towards places such as Interlaken, Grindelwald or Zermatt and mountains stop being something you see in the distance. They begin surrounding you.

The Matterhorn above Zermatt is perhaps Switzerland's most recognizable mountain. Its sharp, almost perfectly shaped summit has become an international symbol of the country.

Then there is the Jungfrau region.

Villages such as Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen sit beneath enormous mountains, while trains and cable cars carry visitors towards high-altitude viewpoints. Jungfraujoch, famously promoted as the “Top of Europe,” is among Switzerland's most celebrated mountain excursions.

But Switzerland's beauty is not limited to famous peaks.

Sometimes the smaller moments are better.

Lake Geneva stretches beside cities and vineyards. Lake Lucerne lies between mountains. Lake Zurich gives Switzerland's largest city a surprisingly relaxed waterfront.

Then there are Lake Thun and Lake Brienz around Interlaken.

Their blue-green water can look so intensely coloured that photographs almost appear edited.

Switzerland Tourism even has travel routes designed around the country's lakes and peaks, connecting destinations such as Lucerne, Interlaken, Montreux and Zermatt.

Sitting beside one of these lakes on a clear morning is an experience that requires very little effort.

No attraction.

No entertainment.

No schedule.

Just mountains reflected in water and perhaps a boat moving slowly across the distance.

Lauterbrunnen: A Valley From a Dream

Among Switzerland's many extraordinary places, Lauterbrunnen deserves special mention.

The village sits inside a deep Alpine valley surrounded by cliffs and waterfalls.

Traditional houses line the valley while mountains rise sharply on both sides. The famous Staubbach Falls drops from the cliff almost directly above the village.

It is the kind of landscape that makes people stop walking simply to look around.

Nearby are places such as Wengen and Mürren, where the Alpine atmosphere becomes even more peaceful.

Switzerland can certainly be luxurious.

But some of its greatest pleasures cost nothing.

Walking through a valley may become more memorable than anything purchased in an expensive shop.

Even the Train Journey Is an Attraction

In most countries, trains simply take you somewhere.

In Switzerland, the train itself can become part of the holiday.

Panoramic routes pass lakes, glaciers, mountain villages and enormous valleys. The Glacier Express crosses the Alps between Zermatt and St. Moritz, travelling through 91 tunnels and across 291 bridges. The Bernina Express takes passengers through Alpine scenery before descending towards the south.

That creates an unusual travel experience.

You do not need to fight mountain traffic or constantly check maps.

You sit beside a large window with a cup of coffee while Switzerland moves past you.

One minute there is a lake.

Then a forest.

Then snow.

Then a village that looks too perfect to be real.

Every Season Creates a Different Switzerland

Summer turns the countryside intensely green.

Walking trails open, flowers appear across Alpine meadows and lakes become places for boating and swimming.

Autumn brings quieter landscapes and changing colours.

Winter transforms mountain towns into snowy worlds of skiing, wooden lodges and Christmas markets.

Then spring slowly brings the valleys back to life while snow remains on the higher mountains.

You could therefore visit Switzerland more than once and feel as though you had travelled somewhere different each time.

The Beauty of Ordinary Life

Perhaps the most impressive thing about Switzerland is not one mountain or lake.

It is how consistently beautiful everything feels.

A railway station may have flowers outside it.

A small village may have a view that would be a major tourist attraction elsewhere.

Public transport can take travellers from busy cities to remote mountain areas without making the journey feel complicated. Switzerland Tourism describes its rail, bus and boat network as one of the easiest ways to explore the country.

Even cities such as Lucerne seem designed around scenery.

Walk across its historic Chapel Bridge, look towards the lake, and mountains rise beyond the buildings.

In Switzerland, nature rarely feels far away.

Is Switzerland Really Heaven on Earth?

Of course, Switzerland is not perfect.

It is expensive. Famous destinations can become crowded. The weather can change quickly in the mountains, and the cost of accommodation can surprise first-time visitors.

But none of that completely prepares you for the first time you stand beside an Alpine lake or watch the Matterhorn appear above Zermatt.

Some destinations impress you because of their history.

Others because of their culture.

Switzerland has those things too.

But its greatest strength is simpler.

It makes you look.

You look through the train window.

You stop beside the lake.

You turn around during a mountain walk.

And again and again, the same thought arrives:

Surely a place cannot really be this beautiful.

Then the clouds move away from the Alps, sunlight reaches the valley, and Switzerland quietly proves that it can.
